For the past two months Artist Emily Speed has been artist in residence at North Wales School of Art & Design. On Wednesday Emily with students from the BA (Hons) Fine Art programme proceeded through Wrexham town with her new artwork. Much to the amusement and interest of passers by, WORK/SPACE was navigated from Regent Street to Oriel Wrecsam where it is now installed. Emily created the WORK/SPACE from furniture purchased from The People’s Market. WORK/SPACE is a relational space for the public to engage with in fun and creative ways.
“It’s been a great experience to be welcomed into an institution and to be able to have conversations with staff, students and technicians – these are things you miss greatly when you mostly work alone” explained Emily, “I am very thankful for the relationships that developed through the project.”
Lecturer of Fine Art Paul Jones expressed his admiration for how the students have participated in the project, “To work alongside an internationally acclaimed artist like Emily is an invaluable experience and really compliments their learning. All the students involved did a great job. 3rd year fine art student Paul (Heppell) was amazing, he gave 100% to the project, very professional”.
Emily has also published a zine including essays and drawing by students and Regent Street staff. Free Copies of the zine are available from the Art School Shop.
Emily’s residency at NWSAD was in association with Oriel Wrecsam’s Off Site Projects.
